Blended Learning

Blended learning is a teaching-learning process where the traditional face to face classroom instructions are combined with computer-media activities. A good way to illustrate the blend is by looking at the Common Semester courses, which use a flipped approach, that includes a combination of synchronous (face-to-face learning opportunities as well as online), and asynchronous (comments, ePortfolios, discussion forums etc) learning. Online spaces used include, but are not limited to: Moodle, Blackboard Collaborate (BbC), ePortfolio, and Google Docs. The technology could help the teaching-learning process more effective since teacher easily observes the students’ development and they also could get the feedback immediately. The definition of blended learning itself is a formal education program in which a student learns:

(1) at least in part through online learning, with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace;
(2) at least in part in a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home;
(3) and the modalities along each student’s learning path within a course or subject are connected to provide an integrated learning experience.

The majority of blended-learning programs resemble one of four models: Rotation, Flex, A La Carte, and Enriched Virtual. The Rotation model includes four sub-models: Station Rotation, Lab Rotation, Flipped Classroom, and Individual Rotation.
Using Blended Learning as one of the way to make the learning process more effective has pros and cons, such :

Pros:
*      Provides for individualized support for the students
*       students can access material at anytime, anywhere, to review the material
*      provides richer, more interactive learning experiences
*       provides more time for collaboration with the students and teachers
*      parents have access to what students are doing - better communication and support
*      studies show it increases student and teacher productivity, improves teaching and learning, and provides more and better data, and helps customize learning.
*      more and more colleges and even workplaces are using this model
*      gives students more time to learn - extends the learning beyond the end of the school day
Cons:
*      Teachers will need time to create and/or select content.
*      Teachers will need training on using this method of instruction to make it effective
*       students will need to be shown how to access, use the technology and what is expected of them
*      Students need to be able to do work outside of school hours
·         do they have access to technology at home?
·         do they have access to internet at home?
·         do they have other things that take up their time (job, etc.)
·          students need to be self-directed to work at home

Ways technology supports the strategy

v  Resources are posted online via class website, LMS (Edmodo, Google Classroom, Schoology, etc). Resources include articles, videos, interactive multimedia, virtual labs, and more
v  Teachers can track which students are using materials at home
v  online materials are available to students anytime, anywhere
v   materials are accessible to parents and specialists to assist the students
v  provides interactive activities, support materials and learning resources
v  multimedia content helps address different learning styles

E-Learning

Nowadays in global era, we are familiar with technology. We couldn't separate technology and our life, means that we often use it in our activity as technology has developed. Then it becomes the principal part today therefore people who want to keep up with global period must acquaint how to operate many kinds of technology. Now learning and teaching using technology is common thing. It’s called E-learning (or e-Learning), the use of electronic educational technology in learning and teaching. It is increasingly recognized as one way to overcome the problem of education, both in the developed countries and in developing countries for example in Indonesia. There are three things a positive impact of the Internet according to Onno W.Purbo (1998); learners can easily take courses anywhere in the world without borders or boundaries of institutions, learners can easily sit on the experts in the field of interest and lectures / study can easily be taken in various parts of the world without relying on the university / school where the students learn. In addition, the current library also presents a more dynamic Internet and can be used in the entire universe. E-Learning will be used or depends on; (1). Is the technology was already a requirement?, (2). Is adequate supporting facilities?, (3). Is supported by adequate funding?, and (4). Is there support from policy makers?
E-learning itself, cannot completely replace conventional learning activities in class. However, e-Learning can be a partner or complementary with conventional learning in the classroom. e-Learning is an independent "basic thrust" of electronic learning activities, but this type of learning activities still require adequate interaction in an effort to maintain its quality.
E-learning offers the ability to share material in all kinds of formats such as videos, slideshows, word documents and PDFs. Conducting webinars (live online classes) and communicating with professors via chat and message forums is also an option available to users. It makes teaching learning process more interesting and easier for teacher to give the feedback on students’ assignment. We could say that the most important developments in education have happened since the launch of the internet. There are many kinds of e-learning tools and application such Grade Guru, Befter , EduSlide, Beenbag etc.
There’s a way to make e-learning effective such as teacher must know the subject material well, the design of the online course should take every learning style into consideration, students and teachers should be able to establish an open line of communication, when designing the site and e-learning platform the ease of navigation and functionality should be top priority, course documents should be available to every student enrolled, then set and communicate clear goals.

History of e-learning

People acquainted with the computer and internet in the late 20th century and it’s kept up with e-learning tools and delivery methods expanded. By the early 90s several schools had been set up that delivered courses online only, making the most of the internet and bringing education to people who wouldn't previously have been able to attend a college due to geographical or time constraints. By the early 90s several schools had been set up that delivered courses online only, making the most of the internet and bringing education to people who wouldn't previously have been able to attend a college due to geographical or time constraints. Then in the 2000Œs, businesses began using e-learning to train their employees. Meanwhile E-learning in Indonesia began in mid-nineties with the advent of internet preceded by information technology introduction to Indonesia in late 70s and early 80s. However, those e-learning initiators hit hard by the economic and political crises which hit Indonesia in 1997s until early 21st century.

The advantages of using online learning:
·         No Boundaries, No Restrictions (Learning anywhere and anytime)
·         More fun
·         Cost effective/low cost
·         More flexible
·         Mobile
·         No travel
·         Tailor it to you
·         Technological possibilities
·         Global

The disadvantages:
·         Lack of control
·         Learning approach
·         Isolated
·         Health Related Concerns
·         Technological issue
·         Computer Competency

Few online tools that can help you to create an e-learning course such

§  LMS is a learning management system is a software-based platform that provides infrastructure, framework and tools to facilitate online learning or training.  LMSs are built on various platforms, commonly PHP, .Net or Java and they will hook up to a database such as PostgreSQL, MySQL or SQL Server. There’s a good thing if you have LMS, it will also have a reporting system so you can access information that would be tricky to gather yourself. It makes your life easier and helps your business or course run smoothly.
§  Website creation platform
§  Course design tools such e-learning design on Google
§  Multimedia production tools
§  Multimedia production tools for instance instant streaming video, crystal clear recording capabilities and instant chat support services.

CALL

http://gowithdflo.blogspot.com/2013/04/call-computer-assisted-language-learning.html

CALL stands for Computer Assisted Language Learning. It is defined as "the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning." (Levy, 1997: 1). In global era technology becomes increasingly ubiquitous. One of the basic technologies is computer. It plays the important role since mostly everything use computer, the simple things such as for doing our task from lecture, usually we use Ms. Office: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Power Point etc. Therefore, it’s possible to use computer as the media for teaching-learning. It could be seen by creating a class blog that can also facilitate the collaborative construction of knowledge, similarly to a class wiki site.

Related with the identification above there are many reasons why ELT teachers use CALL, such as Computers can do some of the work of the teacher and provide great assistance to the learner even without the presence of the teacher (Pennington and Steven, 1992); New technologies have seen computers become smaller, faster, and easier for the teacher to use (Evy, 1997).At present, well-designed CALL software is readily available to the teacher; Technologies allow computers to do multimedia applications, incorporating video, sound, and text, and this capacity allows the learner to interact with both the program and other learners. (Felix, 1998); The computer offers great flexibility for class scheduling and pacing of individual learning, choosing activities and content to suit individual learning styles. (Oxford and others, 1998). The computer can provide a meaning-focused, communicative learning environment, which serves the purposes of communicative language teaching.
Personally, I could say that CALL is a part of education nowadays. The use of CALL in teaching-learning process, especially in English teaching can be divided as follows: (1) Computer as Drill and Practice, (2) Computer as Tutor (3) Computer as Simulation / Problem Solving, (4) Computer as Game, (5) Computer as Tool for ELT teachers and learners, and (6) Applications of Internet for ELT.

However the function of CALL itself could not be separated from the advantage and disadvantage of it. The advantages such CALL allow learners to control their own learning process and progress (learners’ factor) , CALL (internet) provides authentic communication that motivates students to use language outside language classroom (Motivation and Attitudes), CALL can provide immediate responsiveness and feedback (Feedback and Progress Record) , CALL provides opportunities for mastery-learning language skills (Mastery Learning), CALL allows learners to learn cooperatively as a result of working together such as group works, and discussion (Co-operative Learning) and so on. Meanwhile the disadvantages for instance schools may lack funds for CALL implementations. Some CALL hardware and software are very expensive. It is problematic in schools that have limited funding and the design of good CALL software needs expensive equipment and cooperative team work.

Talking about CALL, it will lead us to acquaintance with IWB (Interactive whiteboard software)

It's large interactive display that connects to a computer. A projector projects the computer's desktop onto the board's surface where users control the computer using a pen, finger, stylus, or other device. The board is typically mounted to a wall or floor stand. It makes teaching learning process more fun and interactive.
