CALL

http://gowithdflo.blogspot.com/2013/04/call-computer-assisted-language-learning.html

CALL stands for Computer Assisted Language Learning. It is defined as "the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning." (Levy, 1997: 1). In global era technology becomes increasingly ubiquitous. One of the basic technologies is computer. It plays the important role since mostly everything use computer, the simple things such as for doing our task from lecture, usually we use Ms. Office: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Power Point etc. Therefore, it’s possible to use computer as the media for teaching-learning. It could be seen by creating a class blog that can also facilitate the collaborative construction of knowledge, similarly to a class wiki site.

Related with the identification above there are many reasons why ELT teachers use CALL, such as Computers can do some of the work of the teacher and provide great assistance to the learner even without the presence of the teacher (Pennington and Steven, 1992); New technologies have seen computers become smaller, faster, and easier for the teacher to use (Evy, 1997).At present, well-designed CALL software is readily available to the teacher; Technologies allow computers to do multimedia applications, incorporating video, sound, and text, and this capacity allows the learner to interact with both the program and other learners. (Felix, 1998); The computer offers great flexibility for class scheduling and pacing of individual learning, choosing activities and content to suit individual learning styles. (Oxford and others, 1998). The computer can provide a meaning-focused, communicative learning environment, which serves the purposes of communicative language teaching.
Personally, I could say that CALL is a part of education nowadays. The use of CALL in teaching-learning process, especially in English teaching can be divided as follows: (1) Computer as Drill and Practice, (2) Computer as Tutor (3) Computer as Simulation / Problem Solving, (4) Computer as Game, (5) Computer as Tool for ELT teachers and learners, and (6) Applications of Internet for ELT.

However the function of CALL itself could not be separated from the advantage and disadvantage of it. The advantages such CALL allow learners to control their own learning process and progress (learners’ factor) , CALL (internet) provides authentic communication that motivates students to use language outside language classroom (Motivation and Attitudes), CALL can provide immediate responsiveness and feedback (Feedback and Progress Record) , CALL provides opportunities for mastery-learning language skills (Mastery Learning), CALL allows learners to learn cooperatively as a result of working together such as group works, and discussion (Co-operative Learning) and so on. Meanwhile the disadvantages for instance schools may lack funds for CALL implementations. Some CALL hardware and software are very expensive. It is problematic in schools that have limited funding and the design of good CALL software needs expensive equipment and cooperative team work.

Talking about CALL, it will lead us to acquaintance with IWB (Interactive whiteboard software)

It's large interactive display that connects to a computer. A projector projects the computer's desktop onto the board's surface where users control the computer using a pen, finger, stylus, or other device. The board is typically mounted to a wall or floor stand. It makes teaching learning process more fun and interactive.

Short Essay

ICT stand for Information and Communication Technologies. Literacy in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is fundamental to life in our modern technological society. ICT also plays the important role in Education, means it could help to create the variety of "Teaching and Learning ". Educational ICT tools can be divided into 3 categories: Input source, Output source and others. Using ICT in Education cannot be separated with the advantage and disadvantage of it. There are advantages of ICT tools for education; images can easily be used in teaching and improving the retentive memory of students, teachers can easily explain complex instructions and ensure students' comprehension and they are able to create interactive classes and make the lessons more enjoyable, which could improve student attendance and concentration. On the other hand, there are also disadvantages of ICT tools for education: setting up the devices can be very troublesome, too expensive to afford and hard for teachers to use with a lack of experience using ICT tools. ICTs help improve the quality of education. It can enhance the quality of education in several ways: by increasing learner motivation and engagement, by facilitating the acquisition of basic skills, and by enhancing teacher training. There are many specific ICT tools in education:

-          The Internet is not widely available in most LDCs; radio and TV are Broadcast technologies
-          Radio and TV can have high start-up costs, and reinforce existing pedagogical styles
-          Radio instruction has been used widely and is reasonably well studied
-          TV has been used with success in a few places
-          In some cases, where markets have been liberalized, ICTs are used to distribute educational content regionally within a country
-          CAI is not highly regarded by experts and in OECD countries, but still receives much interest in LDCs
-          It is unclear where to place computers to make sure they are used most efficiently
-          Multi-channel learning is a useful concept
-          Satellite is much hyped, but under-studied
-          New Internet technologies hold promise, but are not yet operational
-          Mobile Internet canters (vans, etc.) are being deployed as a way to reach rural areas
-          Community telecasters are a hot topic, but successful, replicable models have not yet emerged
-          The use of handheld devices is just now receiving serious widespread attention
-          ‘Free software’ holds promise, but costs and impact are still not well documented

Nowadays ICT tools provide us with a vast variety of opportunities to evolve students. Free online tools for teaching and learning such as :

1.       Wallwisher
Wallwisher allows users to build virtual classroom Walls. It is a simple in usage and effective tool easily integrated with traditional language course.
2.       Prezi
Prezi is a cloud-based (SaaS) presentation software and storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas.
3.       Study Blue
It allows teachers and pupils to create sets of digital flashcards, then generate online tests based on them.
4.       Animoto is a video-creation tool that teachers and pupils can use to make dynamic videos, either for the classroom, VLE or for special school events such as parents' evenings and open days.
5.       Wordle is another of those tools that may have begun life as an online novelty, but which canny teachers have since co-opted for use in the classroom.
6.       Storybirds makes available hundreds of high-quality artist illustrations in a range of styles, which pupils can use to illustrate their own ebook.
7.       Popplet is used as a mind-map, Popplet helps students think and learn visually. Students can capture facts, thoughts, and images and learn to create relationships between them.
8.       Google docs offers an on line word processing, spreadsheet creation and presentation package.
9.       Dipity is an interactive timeline tool that allows students to plot text and images, as well as video and audio clips, onto a linear timeline.
10.   Storify is a content aggregator that pulls in social media elements from sites such as Rickr, You Tube and Twitter, to create illustrated multimedia "stories" about current and world events.

Management Information System

Management information systems (MIS) is the study of people, technology, organizations, and the relationships among them. This definition, given by Mays Business School, relates specifically to MIS as a course of study. In other words, MIS is commonly used in business schools to refer to the study of how individuals, groups, and organizations evaluate, design, implement, manage, and utilize systems to generate information to improve efficiency and effectiveness of decision making, including systems termed decision support systems, expert systems, and executive information systems. Many business schools (or colleges of business administration within universities) have an MIS department, long side departments of accounting, finance, management, marketing, and may award degrees (at undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels) in MIS.

Hypertext

Hypertext is text with links. Hypertext is not a new idea: in fact, when you read a book there are links between references (see section 3), footnotes, and between the table of contents or index and the text. If you include bibliographies which refer t other books and papers, text is in fact already full of references. With hypertext, the computer makes following such references as easy as turning the page. This means that the reader can escape from the sequential organization of the pages to follow pursue a thread of his or her own. This makes hypertext an incredibly powerful tool for learning. Hypertext authors design their material to make it open to active exploration, and in doing so communicate their information and ideas more effectively.

Hypermedia

Hypermedia, an extension to hypertext providing multimedia facilities, such as those handling sound and video
Personally, Learning using ICT would increase the students learning motivation since they do not only pay attention on what teachers’ explanation but also learn how to touch on technology. Related with statement above, teachers will also become more creative as long as they know the basic concept of hypertext and hypermedia.
